Today marks a significant event in the lives of millions of aspiring students with the conduct of NEET UG 2026. It would be safe to assume that as students come out of the examination centers after preparing for months, perhaps even years, the first question on their minds would be “When would the answer key be published?”
The answer key is the first step towards assessing your performance and estimating your chances of getting into a medical college. Let us take a look at everything you need to know.
NEET UG 2026: Exam Overview
NEET UG is an examination organized by the NTA in offline mode through pen and paper. There will be 200 objective type questions from subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, of which only 180 are to be attempted.
Considering the cut-throat nature of the competition and fewer seats in some renowned medical institutions, even a small margin of marks can lead to a big difference in ranks. This is the reason why the answer key comes into play for the students post-exam.
Answer Key Release Date
On the basis of past experiences, the NEET UG provisional answer key has been made available within 7 to 10 days after the test date. In NEET UG 2026, the answer key would be made available for the candidates by the second week of May 2026.
NTA will provide the following documents together:
- Provisional answer key
- Question papers
- Respond sheet (OMR sheets)
This joint announcement provides accurate matching of answers.
Importance of the Answer Key
The tentative answer key is vital to keeping the evaluation process transparent. This document allows the candidate to:
- Calculate their expected marks
- Evaluate their performance
- Detect any errors
- Question any wrong answers (if any)
This phase gives them a sense of clarity as well as prepares them mentally for the outcome.
Steps to Download the Answer Key
After its release, aspirants can follow the following process:
- Go to the official NTA NEET website
- Click on the “NEET UG 2026 Provisional Answer Key” link

Challenging the Provisional Answer Key
In case there are any discrepancies in the provisional answer key, candidates are allowed to register their objections via the official platform. This generally involves:
- Registering their objections online within a stipulated period of time (generally 2-3 days)
- Payment of a certain fee per objection raised
- Valid reasons/ documents justifying the objections
The NTA finally publishes the answer key based on all the objections raised.
Tentative Timeline
Below is the schedule estimated according to previous trends:
- Date of Exam: Early May 2026
- Answer Key (Provisional): Mid-May 2026
- Time for Challenges: 2-3 days after provisional answer key release
- Answer Key (Final): Late May 2026
- Date of Result Announcement: By end of May or early June 2026
It is recommended that candidates follow up on official announcements.
Calculating Your Score
The formula based on the provisionally released NEET Answer Key is used to calculate NEET scores according to the marking scheme:
- 4 marks awarded for each right answer
- 1 mark deducted for each wrong answer
- Zero mark for unattempted questions
Formula:
Score = (Right answers × 4) – (Wrong answers × 1)
It helps to get a fairly good estimate of your score.
What is After the Result?
Once the results are announced, the counseling procedure starts. The process includes:
- AIQ Counseling
- Counseling at State level
- Admission to private and deemed universities
Students have to enroll themselves, mention their choices, and attend all seat allotment rounds.
